Green, 34, joined the Knights midway through the 2020 season after seeking a release from the Warriors, only to suffer a season-ending knee injury in his third game for Newcastle.
Soon afterward it was announced that he had signed with Canterbury for 2021, but a change of heart prompted him to request a release, and the Bulldogs have agreed.
It's understood the Knights have signed him to a one-season deal.
Green is expected to return to playing, after recovering from reconstructive surgery, early in 2021.
Once his playing days are finished, he is expected to join Newcastle's coaching staff.
Green shapes as the perfect foil for Knights skipper Mitchell Pearce, who has played alongside a host of five-eighths in his three seasons with Newcastle.
Knights coach Adam O'Brien hopes the presence of Green will bring out the best in fullback Kalyn Ponga.
