MEGAN Burley, Barbie Procobis, Alessia Sakoff and Marguerite Tierney are independently investigating ink as an art medium. These four artists celebrate the use of ink while employing the traditional black medium as a tool to investigate their own conceptual concerns. Paint brush, pen and water are manipulated and pushed to the limit during In Ink. The launch will take place on Saturday, 5pm to 9pm at The Owens Collective.
Brett Piva's Open Studios at Onwards Studio will take place from 12pm to 6pm on Saturday. Piva will be showcasing works in progress, finished works and experiments on paper, glass and canvas across a range of sizes, framed and unframed. He will discuss the use of hand-made brushes, the influence of his sign-writing practice and the inclusion of gold-leaf and water gilding. From Saturday Newcastle Art Gallery will bring together a selection of functional and domestic ceramics by artists alongside works by contemporary ceramic artists. DOMESTIC BLISS elevates the everyday ceramics as fine art, giving the exhibition meaning while in the process revealing stories of place and identity.
The honours exhibition Boundaries: Painting my way home by Katrina Holden is showing until Saturday, at the University of Newcastle Gallery. Holden has been exploring the Australian landscape through the form of abstraction, taking reference from the specific colours and composition of the land around her.
Newcastle Art Space presents LOCUS FOCUS mentorship exhibition. The exhibition concept was conceived and curated by Catherine Tempest as part of her mentorship with Annemarie Murland. Fifteen mentees and 13 mentors exhibit together under the "broad conceptual frame of growth as practice". Artworks range from traditional and experimental painting to sculpture, installation, ceramics and observational drawing. On exhibition and online until December 6.
