Last week, Danielle Rees, manager of Genetics Fitness Club in Warners Bay, offered some considerations for choosing a class.
She also broke down a selection of classes to give our readers an idea of what might work for them.
Here is her second instalment:
- Body Balance. Ideal for anyone and everyone, Body Balance is the class that will improve your mind, body and life. Options are provided for all levels as you bend and stretch through a series of simple yoga moves and elements of Tai Chi and pilates. Body Balance will strengthen your entire body and leave you feeling calm and centred.
- RPM. A group indoor cycling workout done to music where you control the intensity. It's fun, low impact and you can burn lots of calories. Your instructor will take you on a journey of hill climbs, sprints and flat riding and, with the music pumping, you can find your rhythm in the music. You control your own resistance levels and speed so you can build up your fitness level over time.
- Grit Strength. Not for the faint hearted. A 30-minute high intensity (HIIT) workout designed to leave your muscles shaking and you gasping for oxygen. It's designed to improve strength, cardiovascular fitness and build lean muscle. This workout uses barbells, weight plates and bodyweight exercises.
- Zumba. A class for every body. Each Zumba class is designed to put a smile on your face. The work is taken out of workout by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. It uses easy-to-follow moves that combine all elements of fitness - cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility.
- Circuit. A great total body strength and aerobic conditioning work-out using everything from bands, ropes, bosus, balls, bars, bikes to free weights. For the moderately fit to the very fit. You will leave feeling like you have worked every muscle.
- Heartmoves. Our lowest intensity class. It is adapted to the needs of participants with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, a heart condition, are overweight or mature and have not exercised for quite a while. This class is popular because it also offers social connection and a workout in a nurturing environment.
- Active over 50s. A low to moderate exercise program for people who want to age well, stay active as they age and enjoy exercising in a fun and friendly environment. This class is a combination of postural strength, balance, aerobic conditioning and flexibility training.
With most gyms offering a range of classes, there is generally something for everyone. It is just a matter of talking to the experts to find out what will suit your goals and ability while keeping you motivated and bringing results.
