Hunter Water is encouraging the Lower Hunter community to make smart water choices to help conserve our precious resource over the warmer months.

The timely reminder highlights the importance of maintaining our great water saving behaviours as our region's storage levels can quickly fall during periods of dry, hot weather.

Hunter Water's Executive Manager Customer Strategy and Retail Victor Prasad said it's crucial that we all continue to save over summer and not become complacent with our water use.

"Our region's dams have large, shallow surface areas and are prone to evaporation, especially when temperatures are high," Mr Prasad said.

"On a 40 degree day, Grahamstown Dam can lose as much water to evaporation as what we supply to our customers.

"Making smart water choices like only watering outdoors with a trigger nozzle hose before 10am and after 4pm and not hosing hard surfaces can make a big difference when it comes to preserving our water supplies.

"Other simple choices such as reducing your shower time to four minutes, washing your car on the grass or using mulch on your garden, can also add up to some big water savings.

"The severe drought may have eased, however it's important that everyone keeps making smart water choices so that we don't return to our previous water use habits.

"This is our new normal and we need to maintain these sensible water saving measures.

"When it comes to saving water, we can all play our part by making these simple choices.

"Now and forever, let's love water together," Mr Prasad said.

Smart Water Choices

Smart Water Choices are the Lower Hunter's Permanent Water Conservation Measures.

It means that watering with a sprinkler, irrigation system or hose is permitted any day before 10am or after 4pm. This avoids the hottest part of the day when water wastage occurs due to evaporation.

The hosing of hard surfaces such as concrete, paths and driveways is not permitted. Exemptions apply for health, hygiene, safety, environmental, construction and discolouration reasons. All hand held hoses must have a trigger nozzle attached.

Other simple choices to save water

Reducing your shower time is one of the most effective ways to save water. Every minute less is a bucket of water saved!

Aim for four minutes or the length of your favourite song. View our Spotify playlist to help get you started.

Next time you wash your car, park it on the grass if you can. This will ensure any runoff soaks into the soil, rather than washing down the drain.

You can also try using mulch on your garden beds. This helps the soil retain moisture, meaning your plants will require less watering.
