Officers from the Hunter Valley Police District were called to the Golden Highway just before 11am after reports of a single-vehicle truck crash about 10 kilometres northwest of Jerrys Plains.
Police and other emergency services arrived to find the prime mover and its attached trailer had left the road while travelling east near Edderton Road, crashing heavily into an embankment.
The heavy vehicle's driver, 56, died at the scene. Police said he was the sole occupant of the truck.
Investigators established a crime scene and will consider the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Hunter Valley police said they would close the road in both directors for more than an hour in order to recover the heavy vehicle and its load.
