The man was walking on Curlew Avenue about 11am on Saturday when he was approached by two males.
One of the males is alleged to have grabbed the victim by the shoulder and demanded he hand over his wallet. The victim refused and was then allegedly punched in the face, knocked to the ground, and assaulted further.
The assailant tried to wrestle the wallet away, but police said the victim reached up and took a firm hold of the assailant's testicles.
Police said upon doing this, the assailant squealed loudly which caused the second man to flee and attracted a passerby's attention, who came to the victim's aid.
At that time the victim released his grip and the assailant ran off.
The 56-year-old sustained bruising and swelling as a result of the incident.
Police are now reviewing CCTV in attempt to identify the men responsible.
The men are both described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in their early 30s, between 170cm-180cm, with slim builds and short dark hair.
The first man is further described as having facial stubble and missing a number of teeth.
Police are also appealing for the male motorist who stopped to render assistance to come forward, as he may be able to assist police with their inquiries.
Anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the nearby area or who may have dashcam footage or CCTV is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
