Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pacific Highway and Hank Street about 5.15am after a Mazda 6 and a semi-trailer collided heavily.
Police said the impact caused the Mazda to rotate and become crushed against a traffic light post.
The 24-year-old Mazda driver was able to remove himself from the car and sustained minor injuries. He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
The 54-year-old truck driver was uninjured and did not require treatment.
The Mazda sustained substantial damage and is expected to be written-off, police said, while the truck sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene for mechanical inspection.
Major traffic disruptions were experienced in the southbound lane of the Pacific Highway until the scene was cleared.
Police said the cause of the collision is being investigated.
