Beaches from Little Nelson Bay to Fly Point have been reopened but the Nelson Bay marina foreshore is set to remain closed after a sewage main was damaged during excavation works in the marina car park.
Port Stephens Council has received water quality test results back that show the water has returned to normalised levels at the reopened locations.
"We have consulted with the NSW EPA, Hunter Water and Beach Watch to arrive at this decision," a statement from the council said.
The council said water quality had "improved significantly" at Nelson Bay marina but that a decision had been made to keep the foreshore closed for recreational activities over the weekend as a precaution.
Council also thanked locals, visitors and businesses for their patience during this time.
