A 12-year-old girl was in a critical condition in John Hunter Hospital after being pulled unconscious from a pool at Maitland Aquatic Centre this afternoon.
Paramedics and pool staff spent about an hour working to revive the girl who was pulled from the main pool at 3.30pm.
Initial ambulance reports indicated the girl was unable to be revived, however, police later clarified that she was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Jamie Warhurst described the scene at the pool as "heartbreaking"
"No words can describe the scene we were faced with this afternoon," Inspector Warhurst said.
"The lifeguards, bystanders and police did an amazing job, providing resuscitation until paramedics arrived. They should be commended."
