Meanwhile tributes and fundraising pages have appeared online for those who lost their lives in the tragedies at Muswellbrook and Upper Allyn.
Brad Strachan, 61, remained in a critical condition in John Hunter Hospital's Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday afternoon, according to Hunter New England Health, after he sustained what police described as "life threatening injuries" in the crash on Bengalla Road on Sunday night.
Mr Strachan was sitting in the front seat of a rideshare vehicle being driven by 44-year-old local business owner Robert Baker.
Mr Strachan's 62-year-old wife, well-known Hunter school teacher Tracey Strachan, was in the back seat.
Ms Strachan, Mr Baker and the 34-year-old driver of a ute travelling the opposite direction died in the head-on collision just before 9.30pm.
Muswellbrook Rams Rugby League Club paid tribute to Ms Strachan and Mr Baker in a post on social media on Tuesday morning, saying both families were "integral members" of the club.
"Our prayers and thoughts go out to the Strachan and Baker families in the devastating loss of Tracey and Rob," the post said.
"We also pray that Brad (Strachany) has a speedy and full recovery."
Ms Strachan had been a teacher at Muswellbrook High School since 2005.
In a statement to the Newcastle Herald, a NSW Education spokesperson said the school "extends its deepest sympathy" to Ms Strachan's family and friends.
The education department said Ms Strachan was "highly respected by her colleagues and in the community, and will be greatly missed".
A Go Fund Me page has been set up to raise money for costs now facing the family of Mr Baker, who owned Muswellbrook-based rideshare business Movin.
The page had raised more than $5000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
"Rob had big ideas for the future and his rideshare business was rapidly growing," the page administrator wrote.
"Rob had a heart of gold and was a genuinely nice person who would [have] done anything to help anyone."
The trio were not the first to die on Hunter roads on Sunday - 18-year-old Tiarni Simpson lost her life when a Toyota Landcruiser, in which she was a passenger, rolled down an embankment into the Allyn River.
As reported previously, a Go Fund Me page was established to raise money for Ms Simpson's funeral expenses. It had raised just over $2000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
