The worker was granted strict conditional bail on December 23 and is due to return to court to face the allegations.
Charges were laid after police received reports on December 22 that an eight-year-old boy had been touched by a man in a sexual manner while attending a Broadmeadow vacation care program at a youth club.
The State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad began investigating.
With assistance from Newcastle police, they arrested a 57-year-old man at a Lambton address about 11.40pm the same day.
He was taken to Waratah police station, where he was formally charged with three counts of sexually touching a child under the age of 10.
"Police will allege in court that the man sexually touched the boy while working as a volunteer youth worker at a youth club in Broadmeadow," NSW Police said in a statement.
Investigations are ongoing.
Anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
