The Bureau of Meteorology says conditions are expected to be dangerous for rock fishing, boating and swimming as a southerly swell ramps up.
In addition to the Hunter a warning is in place for Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast
A hazardous surf warning is also already in place for Friday on the Byron, Coffs and Macquarie coasts.
The NSW Police Force's Marine Area Command advises people to consider staying out of the water and avoiding surf-exposed areas on foot.
Rock fishers are advised to stay off coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean in favour of seek locations with more shelter. Boaters planning to cross shallow water or ocean bars should delay or change their trips, while those already on the water should ensure they have adequate safety equipment and don life jackets.
Skippers are also urged to remember to log on with Marine Rescue via VHF radio or the Marine Rescue app, and to continue their safety management plan.
The Bureau of Meteorology said it would update its warnings by 5pm on Thursday.
