A FORMER top Australian table tennis player accused of being the head of a betting syndicate that allegedly used his inside connections in the sport to learn about fixed ping pong matches in Ukraine and win $500,000 has appeared in court for the first time.

Adam Michael Green, 40, of Broadmeadow, was represented by criminal defence lawyer Drew Hamilton when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday charged with using corrupt conduct information to bet on an event and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime with the intent to conceal. He did not enter any pleas and the matter was adjourned until May, a longer than usual adjournment due to the complex nature of the brief of evidence, which the court heard would involve obtaining information from overseas.
Mr Green, an ex-table tennis professional, was arrested in December as part of Organised Crime Squad raids across the Hunter linked to a strike force investigating a transnational gambling syndicate allegedly placing corrupt bets on international table tennis tournaments.
