Police are combing multiple crime scenes inside a cordoned off residential area on Goonoo Goonoo Road at South Tamworth after reports a man had been stabbed multiple times.
The 36-year-old was found suffering wounds to the torso at a Coles service station about 3.45am, Police have said.
He was rushed to Tamworth hospital with serious injuries, and was later understood to be in a stable condition.

Oxley police have confirmed a 26-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody at Tamworth Police Station assisting detectives with their inquiries.
Detectives are speaking with multiple witnesses and have called for residents who might have seen the confrontation or the injured man to come forward.
Motorists are being urged to avoid Goonoo Goonoo Road - one of Tamworth's busiest thoroughfares - while the police operation continues.
Police said the operation is expected to last several hours with traffic controllers directing motorists through side streets.
No charges have been laid and investigations are continuing.
