The Sabres, fresh from their maiden T20 Summer Bash title, face an even tougher battle to make the top four for next month's finals series if rain again affects play this weekend.
City are seventh on the competition ladder, but only seven points behind second with two rounds remaining in the regular season.
They are due to be hosted by Waratah-Mayfield on Saturday for a condensed two-day fixture after day one was completely washed out.
Undefeated leaders Wests await in the last round.
"There's a lot of other sides in the same position as us and I think we'd all like to get on this weekend," Nesbitt said.
"It's a pretty open competition and basically everyone has beaten everyone else at some point.
"A lot of the teams above us play each other this weekend so if it just goes down to next week it's probably too big an ask for us.
"In saying that, if we don't get on against Waratah and we have to beat Wests [in the last round] then you should be testing yourself against the best to make the semis."
City are on 37 points. Wests (59) are away to Merewether (38) while Hamwicks (41) visit Wallsend (39). Stockton (40) are at home to Toronto and Belmont (44) have University 2-70 after making 220.
Lewis Hextall is set to return from injury while former Sabres skipper Jonty Major has been ruled out for the rest of this campaign with a broken thumb and finger on opposite hands.
