Police said the driver, believed to be aged in his 70s, died at the scene after his Honda CRV left McDonalds Road about 10.10am on Thursday and struck a tree.
A woman who was travelling in the car as a passenger in the front seat was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The woman, who is also believed to be in her 70s, was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for suspected fractures. Police said on Friday morning she was reportedly in a stable condition.
Hunter Valley Police District officers established a crime scene and have commenced inquiries into the circumstances of the crash.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
