Dr Xanthe Mallett, a renowned forensic anthropologist and criminologist who is an Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle, has joined forces with forensic psychologist Tim Watson-Munro to search for undiscovered victims of Ivan Milat.
The first of a two-part documentary series will air on Prime7 at 7pm on Sunday.
Milat murdered seven backpackers in Belanglo State Forest three decades ago, but Dr Mallett and Mr Watson-Monro believe there could be as many as 20 more victims yet to be discovered.
Milat died in jail in 2019 without confessing to any of his crimes.
"It just seems to defy logic that all of his victims have been found," Dr Mallett told the Newcastle Herald.
"Peter Letcher - who has widely been hypothesised to be the eighth Milat victim - he was found in Jenolan State Forest, a very similar environment to Belanglo.
"It seems that Milat was comfortable and felt confident to use other sites that were very similar in nature to Belanglo but different.
"I think that it's likely there are victims in some of those locations that have never been identified or have never been attributed to him."
