A man and a woman were reportedly in the Dodge Ram 1500 when the fire began but exited and were unharmed, a witness said.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said a crew from the Merewether station responded to an emergency call at 12.18pm.
"Firefighters arrived on scene shortly afterward and found a vehicle alight," he said.
"They extinguished the fire at 12.53pm."
The witness told the Newcastle Herald the utility vehicle was "exploding" and the fire was "throwing bits into the air".
It is not yet known what caused the fire.
Certain models of the Dodge Ram 1500 have been subject to fire-hazard recalls in the past.
