A MAN accused of using a firearm to hold up a takeaway store at Beresfield and then attempting to rob a man, 21, outside is in the Mater Hospital under police guard. Taliai Kevin Saulo, 43, was unable to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday charged with a number of offences, including two counts of armed robbery, driving while disqualified and high-range drink driving.

He was also unable to give instructions to his solicitor and the matter was adjourned until Thursday.
Mr Saulo is accused of using a firearm to threaten an employee at a fish and chip shop at Beresfield about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
A short time later he allegedly threatened a man, 21, and demanded his phone and wallet.
Mr Saulo then fled in a Mazda 3, while police launched a large-scale search of the area.
He was later arrested and allegedly blew 0.244.
