Zachary Williams, 32, of Raymond Terrace, was last week jailed for a maximum of three-and-a-half years over the break-in at the Spinning Wheel Hotel and repeated breaches of an apprehended violence order.
Williams had been repeatedly harassing and breaching an apprehended violence order relating to his former partner in March, 2020 when she moved in with another man at the Raymond Terrace hotel. According to an agreed statement of facts, Williams went around and knocked on the door to ask if his former partner was there, but was told to "just f--- off" before the door was slammed.
Later that night Williams went to another Raymond Terrace pub and lied to the manager, bragging about getting into a fight.
"I have been in a bit of a fight at the Spinning Wheel," Williams told the manager. "I caught a bloke sleeping with me missus, so I bashed him. I went straight to the police station to report it before they could report it."
Bizarrely, Williams then told the manager he was at the pub to steal coins from the poker machines so that he could raise about $600, money he said he would need to buy cigarettes while in jail for the fictitious assault.
But the next night, Williams went back to his ex-partner's hotel room at the Spinning Wheel, somehow managing to climb up onto the second-storey balcony where he was trying to open the door when his ex called out. The man opened the curtains to see Williams standing on the balcony.
He yelled out: "You f---ing dog, you're rooting my missus".
After struggling with the fly-screen, Williams smashed the window and called out to the man: "I'm going to f---en kill you, you c---."
Williams reached through the window into the room to try and unlock the door but then broke a jagged, triangle-shaped piece of glass off the window, which police said was about the size of a dinner plate, and threw it at his ex's new lover.
The glass slashed the man's hand and chest, with blood spurting from his chest as William's ex desperately called triple-zero.
As a result of being hit with the glass shard the man suffered a collapsed lung and bleeding in his pleural cavity.
Williams was found hiding in the boot of a car outside Raymond Terrace police station the next day.
Judge Roy Ellis jailed Williams for a maximum of three-and-a-half years, with a non-parole period of two years.
He will be eligible for release in August, 2022.
