The hosts were ultimately defeated 38-10 by UTS in the decider, but did enough at No.2 Sportsground across Saturday and Sunday to ensure they qualified for next month's series.
"That was our major goal," coach Ross Duncan said.
Earlier on day two of the women's rugby sevens competition, Newcastle beat Sydney Uni 22-12 and Adelaide 12-10 to make the main showdown.
Day one featured a thriller with Australian representative Faith Nathan scoring the match-winner for Newcastle against Canberra (24-19) after full-time. They split their remaining two pool games.
