They recorded a 5-3 victory after Scott Telfer held on against Justin Ely in the closing stages of the Newcastle District Golf Association decider, which had been postponed three times over the last month.
IN NEWS TODAY:
"It unfolded pretty much as you'd expect. There was nothing in it and literally came down to the last group on the last hole," Newcastle's captain Troy Stonestreet said.
"Scott was one up with one to play and we had four matches in, we just needed one more because it was 4-3 at the time.
"Scotty made a great up and down after being half submerged in the water in the hazard on 17. He made a good chip to 20 foot and sunk the putt to stay one up.
"They both parred the last to give us the win. It was pretty intense and there was a massive crowd around towards the end.
"It was the perfect way to finish."
Newcastle quartet Josh Robards (9 and 7), Tom De Wit (5 and 4), Hayden Gulliver (3 and 1) and Mark Ellison (2 and 1) also took out individual matches.
Clayton Small (5 and 4), No.1 Hamish Ellison (3 and 1) and captain Greg McMillan (1 up) kept Waratah in contention.
It was the 12th time Newcastle have held the trophy aloft since the NDGA pennant series started almost a century ago.
Newcastle's best streak was four in-a-row after winning the inaugural competition in 1929. They also went back-to-back in 1936-37.
There was a 54-year gap between titles in 1946 and 2000. Prior to their most recent two crowns, Newcastle's last success was 2006.
They re-entered the top grade last season after taking out second division in 2019.
* BELMONT have earned promotion to A-grade pennants in 2022 after taking out division two.
The favourites beat Nelson Bay 5-1 in the delayed NDGA final at Pacific Dunes on Sunday.
* NDGA junior pennants got underway at Waratah on Monday. Play continues at Nelson Bay on Tuesday and wraps up at Toronto on Wednesday.
* NEWCASTLE Hunter District Ladies Golf Association pennants will now take a break until next month after resuming with round four at Belmont on Monday.
