The investigation was launched after a man allegedly entered a service station on Metford Road at Metford and threatened a male attendant with a knife about 7.50pm.
Police said the alleged bandit demanded cash, but the attendant refused so the man left the store. He was last seen running towards Turton Road.
Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and established a crime scene.
The man was wearing a hooded jumper, a red baseball cap, dark pants and shoes at the time of the attempted hold-up - police said the man's face covered.
As inquiries continue, anyone who may have information which could assist detectives is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
