The Oxytocin Collective draws on power of placenta

In many cultures, the placenta is not simply discarded as medical waste - it is recognised as an organ of great significance.

For the past five years, The Oxytocin Collective has provided a valuable service to the families of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the form of an ancient yet newly appreciated postpartum care practice known as Placenta Encapsulation.

Placenta encapsulation is a process where a whole placenta is transformed into pills that can be taken postpartum.

The Oxytocin Collective team is made up of Ana, Bec and Ysee, who are all advocates of the natural life, natural parenting and the firm belief that a woman's body is capable of the most remarkable things.

With this sentiment in mind, they combine their experience and education to offer Placenta Encapsulation as a natural option to assist in preventing hormonal fluctuations postpartum including the effects of post-natal depression.

"In many cultures, the placenta is not simply discarded as medical waste - it is recognised as an organ of great significance," Ysee said.

"It is the only organ that develops and grows within another organ and is solely responsible for growing a healthy baby."

Each member of The Oxytocin Collective holds Certification in Safe Food Handling Preparation as per the NSW Food Safety Act as well as Bloodborne Pathogens & Infection Control for Placenta Encapsulators by Biologix.

"Once your baby is born, your placenta will need to be refrigerated within 4 hours after the birth, and your Specialist will want to collect the placenta generally within 48 hours of birthing your baby," Ysee said.

"Firstly, this is for health and safety reasons, but just as importantly because you are likely to feel at your lowest on day four or five, it's ideal to have your encapsulated placenta capsules back as soon as possible, to help you through this hormonal dip.

"New mothers who are well supported and well nourished usually recover quickly after birth, and having placenta capsules on hand is a safe natural way to promote postpartum wellness.

"More and more women today are no longer discarding their placentas but choosing to honour their strength and health."

There are two methods most commonly used when encapsulating a placenta.

Firstly there is the method where by the placenta is dehydrated, ground into a fine powder and placed into capsules ready for consumption. This is the The Oxytocin Collective's preferred method.

Secondly, there is the Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) which involves first steaming the placenta, sometimes with medicinal herbs, before then dehydrating it.

The Oxytocin Collective are flexible to your needs and happy to work with you regarding any requests.
