"I had to say, 'sorry mate, I'm getting a helicopter'," Mooney said, as he had tickets that night to see U2. "He [Johns] goes, 'what the hell has happened to you'?"
Mooney's career has been high-flying with his Sydney Triple M breakfast show and popular parody of former PM Malcolm Turnbull. The 56-year-old grew up in Melbourne, but has been able to endear himself to NRL types as a Raiders fan.
"The Raiders are like Switzerland, they're neutral," he said. "If you say you're a Raiders fan people pat you and say, 'good on you'."
Mooney performs lunchtime and dinner shows at Souths Leagues Club, Merewether on Friday alongside Newcastle's Steve Philp and US comedian Al Del Bene.
