City of Newcastle passed a lord mayoral minute on Tuesday night for Tuxford Oval Number 1 to be renamed Bob Palmer Oval.
Mr Palmer was stabbed and killed while out walking his dog in Shortland on a Saturday evening in December.
The Shortland Devils Rugby League Football Club committee, its members, Mr Palmer's family and the local community had called for the renaming honour.
The council motion noted Mr Palmer's "incredible contribution" to Shortland, the club and rugby league.
The council will work with the club and Mr Palmer's family to install a memorial and signage at the oval. During the meeting, Cr Allan Robinson offered to personally pay for upgraded signage, saying he had known Mr Palmer through friends.
"I am happy to pay ... to help the Palmers and get this over the line for a beautiful sign, not a shit thing on treated pine," he said.
