The major responsibilities of pet care are healthcare, wellness and socialisation.
Owning a pet is a big responsibility, financially, logistically and emotionally.
Pet's rely on us for all their needs and well-being.
They need fundamental things like a home, food, healthcare and exercise, but they also need company, affection and socialisation.
Most of these things require significant time and money.
Pets bring so much joy and wellness into our lives, but it is important to carefully consider all aspects and responsibilities of having a pet before deciding to bring a pet into your home for their lifetime.
The major responsibilities of pet care are healthcare, wellness and socialisation, according to veterinarian Felicity Cole, director of Merewether Vet Hospital.
"This allows pets to have a happy and healthy life and fit in readily to people's homes and be positive, welcome members of the community," Felicity said.
Poor pet care can result in pets being sick or in pain, or pets that are lonely or frightened.
"Also, there are broader community impacts of poor pet care, such as straying animals, unwanted litters of puppies or kittens, and poor socialisation," Felicity added.
Educating owners about all aspects of pet care is essential to ensure the welfare and well-being of pets, and to help pets play a positive role in our neighbourhoods.
"It is also important to educate the community about the needs of pets and pet owners, and provide resources in urban areas for pets and their owners, such as veterinary hospitals, off-leash parks, boarding facilities, grooming facilities and safe pet-friendly hospitality venues," Felicity said.
"It is also equally important for pet owners to respect the community resources that do not permit pets, and always abide by rules and regulations relating to pets."
Merewether Vet Hospital is a small animal veterinary hospital, providing a wide range of medical, surgical and health care services for pets and has been serving the pets and families of Newcastle for over 40 years.
"Our clients are the pet owners of Merewether and surrounding Newcastle," Felicity said.
"We provide medical attention whenever animals are unwell, and also to provide regular, routine healthcare to keep pets happy and healthy over their years.
"Veterinary Care is the heart of our business, and a very important community service."
