Now Kavanagh's hoping a little more help from above can prove the difference at Hawkesbury on Saturday as Sikandarabad tries to give the trainer a first metropolitan winner since his comeback.
Sikandarabad will contest the $200,000 group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m), which is part of the club's annual standalone metropolitan meeting.
The eight-year-old gelding has gate one and drops to 55.5 kilograms after a last-start fourth in the Muswellbrook Cup (1500m) on March 26 where interference in the straight and a big weight proved costly.
Kavanagh believed Sikandarabad was well placed to turn around his fortunes on Saturday.
"He races really well fresh and he should have won the Muswellbrook Cup," Kavanagh said.
"He got taken out off the track, he had 62 kilos and he just couldn't quicken into the gap. It just didn't pan out, but he was unlucky.
"We'd love to go to the Scone Cup and this race was just the perfect lead-in. We're praying for a little bit of rain tomorrow. Basically anything to take the edge off the track.
"He's a horse in great form and he's going to be a great chance.
"There's a heap of speed in the race. Greysful Glamour and Archedemus will go quick and he should get a perfect run behind them. Hopefully he's drops on them late."
Kavanagh, who is rebuilding his career after more than four years suspended, has been second twice in stakes races at Rosehill with Sikandarabad, which has spearheaded his comeback.
"We haven't got on the board in the metropolitan area yet, but we haven't been back 12 months," he said.
"If he happened to win a group 3, it would be a huge boost for us. We have been very aggressive this year buying horses. We've bought them from England, Ireland and we've bought a lot of yearlings to set up the stable. To get a kick like this early would be absolutely brilliant.
"He's been amazing for us already. We paid $100,000 for him and he's won $160,000 for us and he's a great chance tomorrow and hopefully for the Scone Cup."
Sikandarabad was a $7.50 TAB chance.
