IT feels like an age since indie duo Big Scary released their brooding single The Opposite Of Us on their 2016 album Animal.
And seemingly during those five years Melbourne's Tom Iansek and Joanna Syme have grown and diversified. Album No.4 Daisy is the funkiest and most playful we've heard Big Scary.
Big Scary were once content to elicit emotion from their neo-folk instrumentation and delicate piano, but it was almost impossible to describe the duo as fun.
Tracks like Get Out!, with it's Uptown Funk-like bassline, almost challenge the listener to dance. If you're not grooving yet, you'll be surely shaking your hips to Bursting At The Seams, which unites another funky bassline and synth chorus.
Wake is another beautiful moment, which arises after the album opens with two instrumentals. Based around a minimal synth riff and Iansek's childish melody, Wake finally builds to a soaring chorus of, "Can I see/ Tired of peeking/ I wake/ Tired of sleeping."
Much of the music made in 2020 boasts a melancholic vibe, but in their introversion Big Scary have discovered a sense of joy.
