Here in the Hunter we have former Newcastle Herald photographer Darren Pateman's Walkley-award winning photograph of Cessnock cricketers playing before a bushfire, which was later reproduced as a mural at Kurri Kurri's Station Hotel.
In 2018 a stunning mural of Sydney Roosters legends like Arthur Beetson and Brad Fittler was unveiled.
However, there's also some god-awful examples. Like the Brisbane Broncos legends mural outside Suncorp Stadium. With its out-of-proportion heads and grey skin - it's hardly "King" Wally Lewis or Allan "Alfie" Langer's best look.
It's so bad it inspired Newcastle sports-comedy band Nah Mate to write their new single Queensland Heads.
The band were at Suncorp Stadium for State Of Origin in 2019 when they stumbled across the mural and decided to film some footage for a future song. Two years later Queensland Heads will be released on Friday after the Knights and Wests Tigers game during the NRL's Magic Round.
It joins Nah Mate's other footy-themed tracks The Ballad of Joey Johns, At Least You Don't Play For Manly and Chickens To Knights.
Nah Mate guitarist and vocalist Greg Smith, aka Bofolk Ballico, said the mural is so bad even Broncos fans seem embarrassed by it.
"It is terrible," Smith said. "I went looking for it afterwards online and was looking for news articles on it and there's nothing online about it. So it makes me think that even when they put it up they weren't happy with it themselves."
EXTRA PLUM
INDIE-pop songstress Thelma Plum has announced a second show at Wests NEX on her forthcoming Homecoming Queen Tour. The show is scheduled for June 23, the night before her sold-out date.
Newcastle-bred indie-pop artist Kira Puru will join Plum on the tour, as well as Molly Millington.
SUPERJESUS JET IN
THE Superjesus were at a crossroads 21 years ago. Their debut album Sumo in 1998 had peaked at No.2 on the ARIA charts and the Adelaide alt-rockers were riding high with charismatic frontwoman Sarah McLeod.
But before writing the follow-up, lead guitarist and songwriter Chris Tennent quit throwing The Superjesus' plans in disarray.
However with new guitarist Tim Henwood, they recovered to release Jet Age in 2000, which featured one on their most popular tracks Gravity, plus Enough To Know and Secret Agent Man.
To mark the 21st anniversary of Jet Age, The Superjesus will perform the album in full for the first time at the Cambridge Hotel on October 28.
SLY POSTPONEMENT
THE latest flare up of COVID-19 in Sydney has resulted in Perth band Sly Withers postponing their near sold-out Newcastle Hotel gig until next month.
Sly Withers were scheduled to showcase tracks from their forthcoming second album Gardens on Thursday, along with support acts Columbus and Semantics, but the show has been shifted to June 10, a day before the record's release.
"This change allows us to avoid Sydney's current restrictions, as well as decreasing the risk of the rest of the tour being affected by our planned presence in NSW this week," Sly Withers said in a statement.
"We know this may come as a disappointment to Newcastle and Canberra ticket holders - but the delay allows all three bands to make it back to you in only a few weeks time."
SERVE OF CAKE
ALI Barter has always had a knack for witty and cutting lyrics, but she's propelled that ability to new heights of her idiosyncratic EP Chocolate Cake, released two weeks ago.
The four-track release is a celebration of letting loose from rules, monogamy and eating healthy, all with her tongue firmly planted in her cheek.
Chocolate Cake follows Barter's albums A Suitable Girl (2017) and Hello, I'm Doing My Best (2019), the former which produced her triple j hit Girlie Bits.
Barter will make her debut at the Stag and Hunter Hotel playing solo on June 25.
BALBI ALL APOLOGIES
MI-SEX frontman and Noiseworks bassist Steve Balbi will celebrate his latest single Sorry on May 21 at Lizotte's.
The track is the fourth single taken from Balbi's 2020 EP I Think I Know For Sure and blends The Beatles with '70s pop-rockers ELO. Balbi will be joined by his Black Rainbow Band, that feature musicians who have worked with the likes of Silverchair, Jimmy Barnes and The Whitlams.
JAZZ ON YOUNG ST
LUKE Tilse and his team at the Young Street Hotel have injected verve and flavour into the grand ole Carrington venue since reopening late last year.
But they've also brought back an old favourite from the pub's Carrington Place days. The Frenchmen Street New Orleans Jazz Band is doing their Thursday night residency from 7pm to 9pm.
