Police said the man was arrested after checks also revealed he had previously been suspended from driving until 2052.
Newcastle-Hunter Highway Patrol Inspector Mick Buko said police were generally pleased with people's focus on safety on the region's roads this long-weekend, despite a handful of incidents.
Officers are continuing to investigate a fatal single-vehicle crash near Raymond Terrace on Friday, which claimed the life of a young man.
Meanwhile, emergency crews were called to the Pacific Highway near Cams Wharf Road on Monday after a three-car collision that put four people in hospital - one in a stable condition and three others with minor injuries.
There were also reports of a crash between two vehicles - one towing a caravan - in the Polblue camping ground area of Barrington Tops.
"I ask everyone to slow down and take care on the roads," Inspector Buko said.
"Think about your own families and others when driving. Thanks to the community for really making an effort this weekend."
