A crowd of government, developer and Newcastle property industry representatives gathered at the 12-storey Store building in Stewart Avenue on Tuesday night to celebrate its completion.
About 400 workers from the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment moved in to the building last month and another 400 from Transport for NSW are due to take up residence in July.
DOMA Group unveiled plans for the 15,000-square metre offices in 2018 after the NSW government agreed to be the building's anchor tenant for 10 years.
The government departments occupy seven of the building's 11 office levels.
The Newcastle Herald reported last week that DOMA was poised to lodge a development application for two 30-storey residential towers on the site next door.
Work has started on two more large office buildings in Hunter Street, Sydney-based developer HYG's 16-storey Birdwood Business Centre and GWH's 8000-square metre Darby Plaza project.
