The fire started just before 8pm Tuesday in the roof cavity of a house in Scott Street.
Six NSW Fire and Rescue trucks, including crews from Newcastle, Merewether, Carrington and Lambton, were sent to the scene.
Four of the adjoining terraces were quickly evacuated and all residents were accounted for.
Fire fighters gained entry to the home where the blaze initiated and found flames had spread from the level four roof cavity down towards level tree.
Crews, with the help of a cherry-picker, managed to gain control of the fire within the hour.
The terrace sustained fire and water damage to level four and smoke damage to level three. Salvage and overhaul teams made the area safe. The fire was not deemed to be suspicious.
