The Belmont pitcher, 24, became the 36^th Australian to play MLB when called upon in the seventh inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Sahlen Field.

The left-hander, who was initially promoted from triple A side Norfolk but not used by the Orioles on Saturday, had 46 pitches in recording the six outs with Santiago Espinal his first victim.

Baltimore went down 12-4 to the Blue Jays, who lead the series 2-1 with a fourth game between the clubs scheduled for Monday.

MLB.com reported Wells' showing as one of the "few silver linings" to come out of the loss.

"Wells' afternoon wasn't easy against Toronto's potent lineup," journalist Justice delos Santos wrote.

"The southpaw needed 29 pitches to get through his first inning, winning a 12-pitch battle with Semien and a seven-pitch battle against Guerrero in the seventh.

"While the left-hander did issue a pair of rare walks - Wells allowed 1.42 walks per nine innings in the Minors - it was an encouraging debut nonetheless."

Baseball Belmont Club released a statement via social media on Sunday: "Congratulations AJ on your MLB debut. Two scoreless innings is a great start to what we hope is a long career for you mate."
