A MAN is dead after a motorcycle crash in the Upper Hunter late on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Macartney Street and Old Scone Road at Merriwa about 10.15pm.
Police said initial reports indicated a Triumph motorcycle with a rider and pillion passenger left the road, throwing both people from the bike.
The rider died at the scene.
Police said the man was yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 50s.
The pillion passenger, a 29-year-old man, received minor injuries.

He was taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment.
Hunter Valley Police District officers attended and established a crime scene.
Police said they have launched an investigation into the circumstances of a crash.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
