Later they became training partners across Europe ahead of Sexton's sole Olympic appearance in London in 2012.
Now, with Royle on the verge of his second Games in Tokyo, retired Sexton pays tribute to the fellow Hunter product.
"As a fellow Maitland Triathlon Club and Hunter Academy alumni, former training partner and good friend, I'm super proud and happy for Aaron on his second Olympic selection," Sexton told the Newcastle Herald.
"Aaron has proven himself as one of Australia's all-time versatile triathletes with victories across a range of distances and formats.
"He'll be a strong addition to Australia's armoury, typically being near the front of the individual race from the start and plenty of mixed relay experience at the top level.
"In addition, Aaron is a team player. His experience and leadership qualities will be a huge asset to his teammates going into their first Olympic journey."
Sexton spoke about his own Olympic journey nine years ago and keeping a close eye on Royle's career ever since.
"Nine years ago Aaron was a big part of my own Olympic preparation, travelling around Europe as my sole training partner," Sexton said.
"After the 2012 Games I relocated back to Wollongong where we became permanent training partners.
"Since then I've watched Aaron continue to grow into a force to be reckoned with in triathlon both internationally and at home."
Royle, 31 of Maryland, will be one three Aussies to contest the men's individual race at Odaiba Marine Park on Monday (7:30am, AEST).
It's a 1500m swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run.
The newly introduced mixed relay event takes place at the same venue on Saturday (July 31), but the final team of four has yet to be announced.
