The Knights have been looking to bolster their outside backs and have been in discussions to potentially bring 30-year-old Gagai back to the club for the last few months.
Talks stalled a couple of weeks ago but the two parties have come back together in recent days to get a deal done. He is expected to formally sign the contract next week.
His signing should come as no great surprise. At the start of the year, Gagai privately told Knights players of his desire to return to Newcastle, which club officials were well aware of.
He previously spent six seasons at the club from 2012 to 2017, scoring 29 tries in 128 appearances in the top grade before accepting a big money deal to link with the Rabbitohs.
But after four seasons in Sydney, he has opted for a Newcastle return where both he and his wife still have family.
Gagai has played seven Tests for the Kangaroos and represented Queensland on 19 occasions.
