The Housing NSW unit block on Darby Street remained cordoned-off by police on Friday afternoon as detectives kept up their efforts to piece together what led to the 40-year-old man being shot in the chest and left for dead in the lounge room of one of the flats.
The Newcastle Herald has been told that the man did not live at the premises - though police have so far been unable to confirm whether or not that is the case.
A resident of the unit block, who asked not to be identified, told the Herald the area was "very quiet" on Friday as police maintained a presence at the scene.
"I'm guessing, like me, everyone last night didn't sleep very well," she said.
"I'm a nervous wreck. I just keep thinking how close it was to home."
Emergency crews were called to the Darby Street unit complex about 12.45pm on Thursday, where they found the 40-year-old with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Three NSW Ambulance crews and a medical team tried to save the man, but he died at the scene.
Investigators have identified the 40-year-old but his name has not yet been made public.
Police want to speak with a man and woman seen running from the block of flats immediately after the shooting - they were seen climbing into a car on Parkway Avenue and fleeing the scene.
The man is believed to have had blood on his face as he was escaping.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Newcastle police commander Detective Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said there were "a number of people in the unit who it appears have taken off".
Detective Superintendent Humphrey told the Newcastle Herald on Friday afternoon that no-one had been arrested over the man's death and the investigation was ongoing.
Detectives from Newcastle City Police District and the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have set up Strike Force Hibbard to investigate the 40-year-old's death.
They are appealing for anyone will information about the shooting - or with dashcam footage from the Darby Street area, including nearby Parkway Avenue, Tooke Street and Brooks Street, around 12.45pm on Thursday - to contact Newcastle Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Information can be passed on to investigators anonymously using the Crime Stoppers phone line or online reporting portal.
