The Newcastle Herald understands traffic has been banked up in both directions at Doyalson on the Pacific Highway - as people queued to get tested at Doyalson RSL.
One driver used social media to describe her experience and warn others of the delays after it took her 40 minutes to drive from San Remo to the Doyalson traffic lights.
Another posted a video on Facebook of the traffic.
Lake Macquarie MP, Greg Piper, said there were five confirmed cases of COVID-19 at Budgewoi from the same household.
"The movement of one household member has led to a large number of exposure sites at Westfield Tuggerah, Lakehaven, San Remo and Budgewoi," he said.
Mr Piper added that the Central Coast situation had also led to a large number of people being tested at Morisset, causing "some traffic delays".

"People from the Central Coast are allowed to visit testing centres anywhere as it's absolutely imperative that people get tested," he said.
"Police are on scene and managing the movement of people in those queues and in the area."
