THE Hunter's Annette Parkes-Considine has been named the NSW Diabetes Educator of the Year, winning a $1000 scholarship.

Ms Parkes-Considine, of Hunter Diabetes Centre at Merewether, was nominated by patients and colleagues for the award, which was presented virtually at the Australian Diabetes Society Annual meeting on Thursday.
She said she was thrilled to fly the flag for diabetes educators, whose expertise, guidance and advice could help people living with diabetes enjoy a long, happy and healthy life.
"I am humbled, honestly," Ms Parkes-Considine, who has type 1 diabetes herself, said.
"As diabetes educators, we are in a position to support people and enable them to have a long and healthy life.
"Patients often come in after a diagnosis and think the worst, but with the right advice and regular assessments, we can help them have really good outcomes.
"To be able to give patients that continuity of care, as a nurse and a diabetes educator, is a real privilege."
