The central defender won an FFA Cup with Adelaide, was part of a Mariners premiership-winning squad and, of course, led the Jets to the 2018 grand final.

But for all his achievements, one void remains - a championship.

Though retired from the professional ranks, it's a box Boogaard hopes to tick with Charlestown Azzurri in the Northern NSW NPL.

In a major coup, Azzurri beat a host of clubs clambering for Boogaard's signature.

"I still have a desire to win something," the 35-year-old said. "Azzurri are my local club. I grew up following them when I was kicking a ball around as a junior for Dudley Redhead. They have made the finals in the past couple of seasons and want to push for a championship. Hopefully, with the addition of myself and a few others, there is a good possibility of doing that."

Azzurri were in fifth spot when this season was suspended due to COVID-19.

As well as Boogaard, Azzurri have signed former A-League midfielder Jacob Melling for 2022 to complement a young squad headed by Riley Smith, Zac Lloyd, Jackson Frendo and Regan Lundy.

"It is a sign that we want to win the premiership next year," Azzurri president Robbie Valentinis said. "Nigel is in the twilight of his career, but he wants to leave a mark. He wants to win something. He can see the players and the culture that has been developed under [coach] Graham Law and feels there is an opportunity for him."

Law said Boogaard's signature was "massive".

"If you are a young kid playing for Azzurri, you are going to go: 'Wow, we just signed the Jets captain'.

"A lot of former A-League players drop down. Nigel is held with such high regard and he has chosen us.

"He still has a lot of drive as a player. Before he agreed to sign, he wanted to know my football philosophy, my training regime ... he has bought in completely.

"We have a really young squad and his experience will be invaluable. Not just his ability as a footballer, but his aura and presence."
