The season was scheduled to begin on November 13 but has been pushed back in the hope crowds will be able to attend matches by the new start date.
Only the first four rounds of the W-League have been announced with the remaining fixtures to come at a later date.
The Jets open their campaign against Sydney FC on December 4 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium as part of a double-header with their A-League counterparts.
"The release of a start date gives us something more concrete," Wilson told the Newcastle Herald.
"Having the first four rounds announced allows you to plan your pre-season and gives you the opportunity to work back from your game and plan your training sessions around it.
"Being able to have that element of scheduling now helps not only me but the players, who need to give notice for work."
Unlike their A-League counterparts, most W-League players juggle work and/or study with playing in the country's top level of football.
Newcastle's first home game will be against W-League newcomers Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium on December 10 and will also serve as part of a Jets double-header.
They face Western Sydney at Wanderers Football Park in round three on December 17 then Phoenix again in round four on December 27.
"We're fully aware of Sydney and Wanderers and what they're potentially capable of, and the fact that they are two very challenging teams to begin with," Wilson said.
"Wellington are a bit of an unknown, so that's exciting to be able to play them first up. But, in order to make finals and in order to win the trophy, you have to be able to beat every team. So, we're not really worried about who we're playing. We're just excited to get the season underway."
The W-League has expanded to 10 teams with the addition of Phoenix. The competition has been played over a 14-round format in the past few seasons with each team having two byes. It is not yet clear as to whether the league will expand to a full home-and-away structure this season.
The Jets are expected to unveil the rest of their 18-player W-League roster in coming weeks.
Twelve have already been confirmed, including long-serving players Tara Andrews, Gema Simon, Hannah Brewer, Cassidy Davis and Claire Coelho.
Attacking players Lauren Allan, Jemma House, Sophie Harding and Sunny Franco have also re-signed, along with defender Tiana Jaber.
