Everyone seems to be getting them, according to Jason "One For" Nunn, from Fisherman's Warehouse at Marks Point.
Point in case is our Fish of the Week winner Madeleine Haines, a keen angler who fishes at least three times a week, she reckons, with her husband.
Not that he was much help this week, when she managed to land her very first jew ever.
"I had my line in the water about five minutes when my husband had to duck home, so I was on my own," said Madeleine, who hails from Morisset and that's about all she was prepared to reveal about where she caught her fish.
"All of a sudden the line goes crazy, I picked it up and started pulling it in and it was extremely heavy to hold the rod.
"At first I thought it was a long tom as it was jumping out of the water.
"I kept winding and to my surprise it was a jewie.
"I thought the line was going to snap when it got close to the shore.
"I thought 'I can't let this one go - no one will believe me.' So I jumped in the water and grabbed it with my bare hands to bring it to shore.
"Hubby returned back just at that moment and could not believe what happened."
It turned out to be Madeleine's first ever jew, and at 75cm, she reckons she didn't miss the opportunity to rub it in.
"He was spewing as he hasn't caught one yet himself," she said.
Good weather
Looks like we're in for a decent long weekend for fishing, weatherwise.
The odd shower is forecast for Saturday, but Sunday and Monday are tipped to be sunny, with light west-nor-west winds and swell up to a metre.
Not a bad outlook for a fish out wide, if only we could, but we can't.
With Freedom Day looming on October 11, or lurching - depending on how you view current infection numbers in the Hunter - water authorities have indicated they will be on high alert over the break monitoring marine movements.
"I guess it's just a bit of a reminder that we are still operating under restrictions," Jason said.
"It's rare that you get a weekend with light winds and seas so if you do head offshore, do it sensible because there are heavy penalities if you are caught fishing outside your Local Government Area (LGA)."
With calm seas and the arrival of a late-ish afternoon tide, conditions will be ripe for an inshore fish.
"There's a few snapper around, flathead on the drift, morwong and that sort of thing," Jason reported.
"Watch out for those dreaded barracouta from down Victoria way. They're definitely outside their LGA.
"Same goes for Texas Reef down south.
"They've been jigging kings down that way, but it's outside our LGA in Lake Macquarie so you need to be careful.
"Maybe do a bit of live baiting around Moon Island and Catho and see how you go.
"There's still big salmon and tailor schools off the coast."
Prawns run
Tonight marks the ninth night after the last full moon so we might see the first prawn run of the year kicking off.
"That run will last a week or so and is traditionally a trigger event that will bring fish into the estuary," Jason said.
"It probably partly explains the arrival of bream and whiting along the beaches this week and it's going to catapult the fishing heading into November.
"Anglers report getting a lot of bream milking and spawning which they tend to do in the lead-up to this first prawn run.
"We're also seeing flathead moving from deep water into the shallows too as we moved past the Spring equinox on September 23."
Men of legend
Randall Mason, from Teralba Lakesiders Fishing Club, reports Peter "Hawk" O'Davis, father of Knights legend Robbie, landed a 45cm whiting in Swansea channel this week.
"Funny thing is one of our other members is the father of another former Knights star, Daniel Abraham," Randall said.
Tailor made
Long weekend anglers working the lake might still find a few tailor about in the southern sectors down round Pulbah island.
"Surprisingly they're still about so keep your eyes peeled for bird action and fish busting up on the surface," Jason said.
Rocking it
Rock and beach fishing should be good this weekend.
There's been some quality luderick and drummer on local rock platforms up and down the Hunter Coast, not to mention the odd bream.
"Fishing for drummer is great action fun too," Jason said.
"Berley up with bread and float an unweighted peeled prawn into that and hold on.
"Drummer go hard and you might even catch one fishing with cabbage for luderick too."
Clock on
All up it's looking like a great long weekend looming - just don't forget to wind your clock forward an hour on Sunday otherwise you might miss something.
