The hospital's owner, Healthe Care, has lodged a development application to construct a bridge spanning a 40.5 metres between the main building and the Kingsland Day Surgery.
The $1.2 million project is part of Healthe Care's long-term vision to grow the facilities and services offered at the site.
The 2.4-metre wide bridge would connect the two buildings at their first floors and provide an all-weather link for staff, patients and visitors, "avoiding conflicts with vehicles and reducing travel time between precincts", planning document say.
The bridge would be 4.8 metres above the road and supported by six columns, including two in the street's existing six-metre wide median strip.
The overall structure would be slightly lower lower than the existing buildings.
Under the plans, overhead powerlines along Merewether Street would be moved underground.
There is considered to be little to no impacts on views from surrounding properties nor on existing traffic.
The majority of the bridge would be enclosed with glazed transparent panels.
The DA is on exhibition until October 18.
