With 10 minutes to play in the league match, Coleraine levelled the score at 2-2 after Burns lost the ball on the half-way line as he attempted to control a pass from team-mate Gael Bigirimana.
An incensed McCarey raced out to confront defender.
The keeper flattened a shell-shocked Burns and then dragged him by his shirt before the rest of the side could intervene.
After a discussion with the linesman, referee Andre Davey gave McCarey his marching orders.
Burns eventually got back to his feet and played out the game as Glentoran held on for a share of the points,
Furious Glentoran fans turned to social media to voice their disgust and called for McCarey to be sacked.
Club legend Paul Leeman also slammed McCarey's actions.
"I am still in shock from it," Leeman told the BBC. "Bobby Burns gave the ball away on the halfway line, that's why the keeper was incensed with Bobby.
"That moment has overshadowed what has been a fantastic game of football.
"This will be seen everywhere around the world tonight. It is a moment of madness and he (McCarey) has realised that when it's too late."
Leeman said referee Andrew Davey had no other option but to send McCarey off.
"I don't think the referee has any option but to send him off. It is the assistant who sees it," he added.
"Both hands are raised and he's gone at Bobby Burns with force. He has then lifted him by the scruff. It is unbelievable, I can't believe it."
Burns was a fan favourite at the Jets in 2018-19 season, playing 16 games, when on loan from Scottish Premier League club Hearts.
The 22-year-old left Hearts in August 2020 for English side Barrow but joined Glens on loan two months later. He made the move permanent this season despite suffering a badly broke ankle last November.
