Emergency services were called to a granny flat behind a home on Terry Avenue, Woy Woy, about 11.40pm Tuesday following reports of a fire.
NSW Fire and Rescue officers extinguished the blaze a short time later and a person's body and a deceased dog were found inside the premises.
Officers from Brisbane Water Police Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which has been forensically examined.
The man's body has not yet been formally identified. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
The circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire are under investigation.
