It's not too late to visit the Kilgour Prize show at Newcastle Art Gallery. Nathan Paddison's piece, Flour Sail, which won the People's Choice, is perhaps one of the most intriguing pieces in the show. This year's winning piece was by Lori Pensini of Western Australia.

Castanet Club
In the fun stakes, the exhibition on the Castanet Club at Newcastle Museum is high on the list. The Castanets, a group of young friends living, studying, and working in Newcastle, formed a cabaret act that went on to national and international acclaim. The exhibition features costumes, props and performance footage as well as a commissioned work from artist Michael Bell and documentary filmmakers, Chit Chat von Loopin Stab and Tony Whittaker that explore The Castanet Club's influence and legacy.
Justin Lees
A new show by Justin Lees at Blackstone Gallery on Hunter Street in the cityi will be highlighted by a "meet the artist" event on Saturday, October 23. This exciting talent has a bundle of choice abstract works on show.
The Lock-Up
The Lock-Up announced on instagram that will reopen on December 5 with a show featuring Sam Smith, Australian artist and filmmaker, whose work brings documentary and archival content in contact with speculative narratives to render visible the connective charges between geological formations, architectural apertures, (cinematic) histories, paranormal entities and unimagined futures.
Maitland Regional Art Gallery
Maitland Regional Art Gallery is also open, featuring several shows, including Unpreparable by Fiona Lee, and Barka, The Forgotten River, by Justine Muller & Badger Bates, and Bushfire Brandalism (in February 2020, 41 artists took to the streets for the nation's largest unsanctioned art campaign #BushfireBrandalism.)
