On Saturday at the Welders Dog in Tamworth they will perform their first gig with new member Hunter Beasley (mandolin, vocals) in what they hope is a successful rebirth of the four-piece.
Good Corn Liquor came to a devastating halt on April 22, 2015 when their original vocalist, Stu McKenzie, 29, was killed in a car accident north-west of Singleton while the band were travelling to their hometown of Gunnedah for a show.
Other band members Ben McCauley and Nick Wright were seriously injured in the crash and the 17-year-old driver of the other vehicle was killed. Guitarist and vocalist Ben Murphy was overseas at the time.
The surviving members have reunited before in tribute shows, but the upcoming tour will kick-start a second coming of Good Corn Liquor and new material is expected in 2022.
Last month Good Corn Liquor's 2012 self-titled debut album and the EP Cream Of Corn (2015) - which was recorded a week prior to McKenzie's death - were added to streaming services.
"It was definitely emotional listening to the music online and thinking about where we're heading and what we're about to do," Murphy said.
"There will probably be a bit of emotion to it [the shows], but at the same time as Nick, Ben and I have done with most milestones over the last six years, we will quietly acknowledge it amongst ourselves.
"We had have many deep and meaningful conversations over the years about where we are and where we've come from. There will definitely be an acknowledgement.
"We don't forget that Stu was part of the band and we can't do that because we wouldn't be doing these gigs if it wasn't for that original camaraderie."
All three original members have kept active in music since 2015, most notably Murphy, who released his solo album Carousel Keepsakes in 2018 as Carl The Bartender.
Earlier this year when Murphy and Wright were living together in Mayfield talk turned to relaunching Good Corn Liquor. McCauley was also keen and soon Beasley was asked to join.
"We obviously want to protect the legacy that Stu helped to forge with the band in those early years, but at the same time we think we owe it to ourselves a little bit as well and the people that love and follow the band," Murphy said.
Good Corn Liquor play the Stag and Hunter Hotel on November 26.
HAMILTON OPENS UP
FOR several years while he studied law former Broadway Mile drummer Brendan Kelso felt bitter about music after slogging it out through his 20s.
But the love for good songs has returned. On November 26 the Newcastle singer-songwriter will release his debut solo EP This Is Me under the moniker Brendan Hamilton.
This Is Me's four tracks are inspired by Hamilton's love of late '90s and 2000s rock-pop music like Nickelback, Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty and The Fray.
"When I was writing This Is Me, I think I wanted to tell the world who I really am," Hamilton said.
"I felt like I'd missed that opportunity with previous musical projects. Maybe I was afraid to be really honest in my lyrics. So this time around, I laid it all out. I approached it like if this is the last song I write, I want to be 100 per cent honest."
SKYLINE COMPLETE
DASHVILLE Skyline has finalised its 2022 line-up after adding Melbourne folk-roots artist Jordie Lane and Hunter Valley acts The Tall Stories, Magpie Diaries and Piper Butcher to the stacked bill.
Skyline returns on February 25 to 27 and is headlined by The Black Sorrows, The Murlocs, Liz Stringer and William Crighton.
TRIPLE ONE COMING TO TOWN
SYDNEY hip-hop group Triple One have teamed up with DMA's guitarist Matt Mason to co-write their latest single Come Over.
The melodic track mixes rap and indie-pop influences and sees the four-piece move away from their traditionally slapstick brand of humour for a more contemplative and serious tone.
Come Over follows Triple One's albums The Libertine 2 (2019) and Panic Force (2020) and their hit singles Butter and Autumn Collection, which have been streamed in excess of 14 million times on Spotify.
It's led to raucous live shows at Falls Festival, Listen Out, and this year's virtual Splendour XR.
Newcastle fans will have a chance to witness Triple One live when the Come Over tour lands at the Cambridge Hotel on April 14.
FUNK BACK ON
THE historic 48 Watt Street will be serving up the rhythm with dinner on Thursday night when Newcastle party band Zenith Pop Funk return for their first gig post-lockdown.
The seven-piece, fronted by Alice Palmer, perform re-imagined funk versions of modern pop songs.
Zenith Pop Funk's gig is part of 48 Watt Street's new fortnightly Music Club dinner and show nights where the emphasis is on supporting local performers.
LUCKY SEVENS
CHRISTMAS will come early to the Seven Seas Hotel with the Carrington pub hosting a free all-local music festival on December 19.
The 7 @ The Sevens will feature Bloody Hell, Mild West, The Appointments, Maeve Grant Band, Newdark, Regikay and NTL Landmarks.
It'll be the NTL Landmarks first live performance in two years.
