Brisbane Water police began investigating after emergency services were called to King Street at Umina Beach about 1.15am on July 21 after reports a man had stab wounds to his arm and torso.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene, taking him to Gosford Hospital.
He has since been released.
Police established two crime scenes, one at the unit and another in a pedestrian laneway spanning from King Street to Bourke Street.
Detectives formed Strike Force Crush to examine the incident, and police said on Thursday their initial inquiries indicated the man may have been approached by a group of up to four earlier in the evening at an unknown location.
IN THE NEWS:
"It's understood the man may have then been taken to locations including a water tower at Patonga, before being dropped off by a vehicle near Bourke Street, Umina Beach, just before 1am," NSW Police said in a statement.
"Police believe the man was injured while he was detained."
The images released on Thursday show two men and a vehicle.
The first man depicted is described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance, aged in his 20s, with brown eyes, black hair and is wearing a brown hooded jacket.
The second man depicted is described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his 20's, with short brown hair, hazel-coloured eyes and with short black stubble. He is seen wearing a white t-shirt.
The vehicle is described as a silver Subaru hatchback, and police said inquiries led them to believe it may have been in the Bourke Street area around the time of the incident.
Detectives want to speak to the driver and any passengers.
Brisbane Water district commander Superindent Darryl Jobson said investigators had made progress but they believe members of the public have crucial information yet to be uncovered.
"Despite four months passing since the incident, we believe there are people out there in the community who may have information that is key to solving this investigation," Superintendent Jobson said.
"Police would like to hear from anyone whose memory may be refreshed by the images released today - no matter how insignificant the information may seem - it could be valuable to detectives," Supt Jobson said.
Police urge anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
