The region received eight of the 17 awards given to Aboriginal students from public schools across the state for outstanding achievement in academia, leadership, public speaking, sport and performing arts.
"It is thrilling to see that by embracing the diversity of schools, communities, students and staff that support and champion Aboriginal education, we can continue to fully embody the spirit of Nanga Mai, which is the Eora word for 'to dream'," Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning Sarah Mitchell said.
Hunter Sports High's Milan Hammond and Lauchlyn Spicer took home Outstanding Achievement in Sport Awards for their success in soccer and rugby respectively. Dungog Public's Sienna Gordon also received a sport award in the virtual ceremony on Tuesday for her PSSA representation in netball, touch football, basketball and rugby sevens.
Bella Way claimed an award in the Outstanding All Round Student Category for her achievements in soccer, mathematics and role in the Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG) at Cardiff South Public. Bella was also commended for her cultural pride and ideas on how the school can be more inclusive for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Students.
Whitebridge High's Toby Smith, who has led interviews and networking for the Whitebridge Television program over the past three years, was recognised for his Outstanding Achievement in Public Speaking.
Hunter Blunden of Lambton and Ella Warrall of Newcastle High both received awards for Outstanding Student Leadership with Tameka Murray of Toronto High receiving an award for Outstanding Academic Excellence including recognition of, among other academic successes, her poems written on the Aboriginal experience.
